Dating from about 1890 when Queen Victoria was on the British Throne and the Empire at its height.
Of excellent construction typical of its period, with solid Victorian values, this chest is stoutly built of good quality pine. The original finish would have been red ochre graining and polish. At some time (probably fairly recently) a distressed pale creamy-gray color paint finish has been applied.
The chest sits on four turned feet, surmounted by a flat plinth. The front pillars carry a favorite decoratative effect of this era: substantial barley-twist half spindles, which serve to give visual support to the pretty scallop-front top.
This is quite a large chest of drawers as would befit a middle-class Victorian household with a large family of children. The two-over-three configuration provides convenient smaller drawers at the top and more commodious storage below.
All the drawers are in excellent condition, not strained or askew in any way and clean internally. All have original locks and handles and there is a single key which fits all of them. They slide smoothly and neatly.
There is a small area of recent damage at the front on the top – see photo. This is about 11/4" (30mm) long and not very deep.
An attractive and practical piece of furniture, with nice proportions and of a really useful size. Entirely original construction, fitments, handles and locks and in excellent structural condition. Solid Victorian workmanship and materials will give years of service. Perfect for the larger bedroom.
Approx. Dimensions: (Dimensions are given over the moldings)
Length: 451/4" (1150mm). Width: 207/8" (530mm). Height: 411/2" (1055mm). Weight: 90 lbs (41.0kg).
