The Living Room is the largest room in our beautiful six room upstairs apartment. Three windows overlook the water with expansive views of the islands and Rockland Breakwater and Owl’s Head Lighthouses. The wide pine floor is new, and bright handmade rugs are scattered over it. The leather chairs and love seat come from England. The comfy sofa is also a pull-out Queen size bed. There is a state-of-the-art LCD TV to receive cable television, also equiped with a DVD player.
The art work in this room is quite varied and represents American and English artists done in oil, charcoal and watercolor. All needlework was done by Alma Weary from original designs and English needlepoint kits. The posters reflect artists from both London and those artists who visited or lived in Rockland. The large oil to the left of the fireplace is by English artist, David Thomas (there are two more of his paintings upstairs, one each in the yellow bedroom and in the blue bedroom).
Don’t worry that the chimney is falling over! It’s meant to be like that. In the past, masons curved chimneys so they exited from the roof where they wanted them to. The chimney has been lined with a new stainless steel liner in 2006.
On the chimney you will see a yacht’s gimballed cabin lamp and an 18th century copper saucepan with lid. By the Vermont Castings Stove, there is a ship’s block which came from the sailing ship Joseph Conrad, the last square-rigged ship to sail under the British flag.
On cool nights there is a traditional New England wood burning stove to keep you cozy. We supply the firewood.
