Maine is a favorite destination for those who love the ocean, who love nature and who love the ourdoors and the fresh Maine air. Rockland has all these a-plenty including the largest Windjammer fleet in the world, but with its extensive galleries and historic downtown, it is also the destination for those who love art, antiques, who like to eat out and who like to spend time browsing the shops.
Many think of Maine as a summer destination, but there are three other wonderful seasons in Maine which can be quite as exciting and rewarding.
For some, the foliage season is their favorite, which isnt surprising: Maine offers a beautiful setting for natures brilliant show. Head to an orchard for apple picking or a glass of frehly pressed cider. Do a little fly fishing. Go canoeing. Go biking or hike, but be sure leave some time to hunt for antiques or paintings – artists abound in Maine.
Maine offers some of the least crowded skiing on the East Coast. Camden Snow Bowl uniquely overlooks the brillant blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The World Tobogganing Championships also take place here each year. Two hours from Rockland, Sugarloaf Mountain at 4,237 feet has 129 trails, 15 lifts some of which go above the tree line.
In the Springtime, the snow and ice are melting and the rivers and streams are running fast with the melt water. White water rafting is big. Spring flowers are starting to show and the migrant birds are arriving. Spring is the perfect opportunity to follow the Maine Art Museum Trail. Maine has inspired many legendary artists, such as Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, George Bellows, Alex Katz, and three generations of Wyeths, to mention but a few. There are seven nationally recognized museums which hold over 53,000 works of art.
